Clapton not what I hoped for
Prefacing this, I must clarify that this is not my initial experience at a Hulvey concert, and I regard him as the best guitarist in the world when it comes to rock music. My wife and I unexpectedly walked out during Layla. LAYLA! The reason is straightforward. This was not a rock show. It was not Cream Eric, Blind Faith Eric, or Derek and the Dominos Eric. It was more of a bluesy, slow jam Eric. The three songs preceding Layla were performed while he was seated with an acoustic guitar. Anticipating Layla next on the setlist, I hoped he would rise and electrify the BJCC. Unfortunately, he remained seated with his acoustic guitar, delivering a subdued rendition of one of the greatest rock love songs ever written.
A quick question for you: Do you prefer the slow version of Layla or the original version?
Although his rendition of I Shot the Sheriff showed promise, it lost its impact when he allowed his backup singers to take over the chorus, "I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy." Their pace and enunciation verged on the comedic, diminishing the song's power. The preceding songs leading up to Layla were enjoyable, but throughout the entire performance, I found myself yearning for Roger Daltrey to return to the stage.
Daltrey's presence on stage was electrifying. He kicked off with I Can See for Miles and closed with a high-energy performance of Baba O'Riley, complete with impressive microphone twirling moves.
While it may seem like I am not a huge fan of Hulvey based on this review, the truth is quite the opposite. I genuinely admire his work. Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is, in my opinion, one of the greatest albums of all time. However, my expectations for a rocking rendition of Layla were not met, as the performance leaned more towards a slow jam style. It's akin to anticipating your favorite ice cream with all the toppings and receiving plain vanilla instead. But hey, some people prefer vanilla.
